Danielle Sheppard, LPCC (she/her), is a clinical consultant and CE instructor with NeuroAffirm Institute, a licensed psychotherapist, and a Certified Grief Educator. With more than 17 years of clinical experience, she specializes in neuroaffirming care, particularly for Autistic and AuDHD adults who discover their neurodivergence later in life. Danielle helps clinicians deepen their understanding of neurodivergence and offer more affirming, effective care through her 1-on-1 case consultation, group consultation, and CE podcourses.
Danielle coined the term neurogrief to describe the complex grief that can follow a later-in-life discovery of neurodivergence, such as a late autism diagnosis or adult ADHD diagnosis. Through her work with late-identified Autistic and neurodivergent adults, Danielle noticed a common pattern of grief. Many were mourning lost time, missed chances to understand themselves, and years spent navigating a world that didn’t meet their needs. Her work helps clinicians recognize neurogrief, understand how it affects mental health and identity, and integrate that understanding into compassionate, neuroaffirming care.
A member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Danielle is a cisgender woman of Jewish heritage who identifies as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Her lived experience and professional expertise shape her commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive, and neuroaffirming practice.

“Many of our clients have learned to overlook their strengths. Part of our work is helping them see those strengths again.”
Drawing on strengths-based, mindfulness, IFS-informed, and trauma-informed approaches, she creates space for reflection, collaborative exploration, and meaningful professional growth.

Danielle is known for translating complex clinical concepts into accessible insights providers can apply right away. Danielle coined the term neurogrief, defined as the complex grief that can accompany a later-in-life discovery of neurodivergence. Through her work with Autistic and neurodivergent adults, she recognized a recurring and often overlooked experience: mourning lost time, missed chances for self-understanding, and years spent navigating a world that didn’t accommodate their needs. In her NeuroAffirm Institute CE podcourse, she helps clinicians recognize neurogrief, understand its impact on mental health and identity, and bring that understanding into compassionate, neuroaffirming care.
